Responsibilities
I was chief architect and instructional designer for this course. I pulled from my own experience working as a camp counselor for several years. In order to develop a useful and accurate course camp materials were used with some details changed. This course was developed as part of IDOL Academy's Do It Messy jumpstart program.
The Problem
This concept project is for Camp Wallaby, a summer camp by a beautiful lake. The summer camp always has new hires as other counselors age out of their positions working for the camp. Most of the counselors are between the ages of 15 - 23. Even when they return to work at the camp, it is essential for them to review the safety to ensure they and the campers are safe. In addition, most work training in the past consisted of sitting in the main cabin with a long and text heavy PowerPoint presentation. When counselors were observed they often seemed bored and lacked focus on the training, leading to poor retention of material when assessed.
The Solution
After assessing the problem, and drawing from my experience in the role of a camp counselor, I determined that a combination of styles of learning would benefit. Alongside this eLearning experience, the new hires would be given a comprehensive tour of the campground and all of its key locations as well as provided quick reference guides in the form of job aides regarding the content covered in the course for quick review during the work day.
The Process
I started with a backwards design model first creating the necessary objectives for this course. As I was acting in the role of instructional designer and SME for this course, I referred to my old training modules from when I was a counselor so as to create these meaningful and realistic learning objectives. Once this process was completed, I created a storyboard keeping in mind the capabilities of the Rise 360 platform to build a course which was easy to follow and flowed well.
I wanted to ensure the learners could make similar decisions that they would have to make while working at the summer camp in a safe and stress free environment so I created a branching scenario in Rise 360 for learners to interact with. In order to do this properly, I created an action map of how I wanted the scenario to play out for reference while building it. Any time a learner got the answer incorrect, they were offered an opportunity to improve upon and revisit their answer being provided with guidance along the way as to why their answer needed to be revisited.
Once the draft of the course had been completed and previewed to ensure it all the pieces flowed together, I sent out the course for review from my peers in various Instructional Design communities. After receiving valuable feedback and making revisions to content within the course I published the finished and final copy.
